Department - Fails in Every Department
I was eagerly waiting to watch Ram Gopal Varma's Department for several reasons, Firstly for favorite actors Mr Amitabh Bachchan & Sanjay Dutt, when these legendary actors are in the lead roles; expectations from the movie are obviously very high. Secondly RGV is a master of underworld movies like Satya, Company, Sarkar etc. But when those expectations are not met it comes as a huge disappointment, same happened with Department. After watching this movie the first question came to my mind, Can anyone remember when the last time we watched a good RGV film? I am sure we don't remember. It's the same old story. Not known for subtlety, the story revolves around internal politics of the police department, the Mumbai Police forms a new force called 'Department' to finish the underworld by stepping over the law's boundaries. This force is beyond the law. Mahadev Bhosale (Sanjay Dutt) heads this team. Shiv Narayan (Ran Daggubati) joins in the team. These two police officers on their way to eliminate the underworld turn out to be the puppets in the hands of underworld don turned a corrupt politician, Sarjerao Gaikwad (Amitabh Bachchan). Amitabh Bachchan & Sanjay Dutt, the extraordinarily talented actors are wasted. The legendary Actor Amitabh Bachchan was good but not at his best. Sanjay Dutt was average and looked completely disinterested in what he's doing. Rana Daggubati appears earnest acting out his scenes but seems to be taking his character and the film a little too seriously. Vijay Raaz as usual puts in a decent effort. The leading ladies have nothing much to do. The cast can't do anything with the horrible script & the characters are so thinly written. As a matter of fact the movie has nothing good to offer, the characters are drawn out badly, direction is confusing, and the script is bad. Ram Gopal Verma's signature style of making movie failed miserably. It's such a shame that brilliant director Ram Gopal Verma, with good characters and a great cast can end up like this. He did not try to make the movie novel; he has just borrowed the concepts from his previous underworld films and put them into the mixture of Department. Director RGV could have made a much better movie, provided he would have given time and space to each character. He does not focus on narrating the story in an interesting manner & gets caught up with the unconventional camera and editing techniques. Dharam Sandeep, Bappa Lahiri and Vikram Nagi's musical tracks are unimpressive and do not add any value to the progress of the film. Choreography, by Ganesh Acharya and Shabeena Khan is not impressive. Nathalia Kaur's item song is vulgar. On the technical front, action by Javed Aijaz is simply breath-arresting. Cinematography is below average & does not rise up to the occasion. To conclude, Department is a pretty boring movie in spite of brilliant cast. The movie fails to hold interest from the first scene itself and is not even close to the earlier films by the director.
