Whether the election verdict of the 2009 general elections makes one jump with joy or morose, there is no doubting the wisdom of the Indian electorate. When everyone's uncle and our omnipotent media were predicting a hung parliament, and a period of horse-trading the electorate have voted in sufficient numbers for the UPA to almost get a majority without outside support. The second big positive of this election is the reemergence of the national parties. We will now have a strong and stable central govenment kept on its toes by a sizeable opposition.
What is heartening is that small regional parties and maverick personalities have been shown the door. The Laloos, the Mayawatis, the Amar Singhs and the Jayalalithas will now hopefully spare us their histrionics. Another noticeable feature of this election is the coming of age of Rahul Gandhi as a politican. He has certainly earned his spurs. He decided to take the lonely and long road of trying to revive the Congress in UP, something for which he was derided and mocked .Yet by the dint of his perseverance he rewrote the fortunes of the Congress party in the state, somthing that the party stalwarts had never imagined would happen. The breaching of the bastion of the left too could not have come at a more opportune time. The Manmohan Singh government can now usher in the neccessary economic reforms, that were so perversly blocked by the left in the last coalition. Hopefully they will also now be able to do something about the budget defecit. The BJP should not lose hope completely. As the leading party from the opposition coalition it is their duty to see that the UPA coalition does not become complacent because of their emphatic victory. The BJP should also chalk out its future strategy and prepare a new generation of leaders who can show it the way forward. The nation expects a lot from both its national parties. A big cheer for Indian democracy. Jai Ho! Subscribe to WellWisher's blogs You can stay up to date with WellWisher's blogs via these feeds.
