It is heartening to know karnataka too has joined the bandwagon of tourism in a big way.......by recruiting 150 odd tourist police to guide and protect the international travellers visiting karnataka. We saw the event live and unfolding on the premises of Vidhana soudha. The CM was seated in the podium and later addressed the recruits. I suggested we halt and witness the ceremony, but DEV had enough of the political leaders bhasan without action and me too was convinced. I refrained because when i took snap of the CM last time around, he lost his seat. So we moved on to Unity building to book air ticket.
It is a general practise that foreign tourists are easy prey to touts and unscruplous traders. They feel since foreigners earn more they can afford to pay double the rate than Indians. The Athithi Devo bhava campaign to is targetted at creating awareness among the public at large not to harass the foreigners by begging or peddling goods at high price. Unfortunately the attitude of some travel agents too is skim the tourists whether domestic or foreign. Since tourism is the biggest industry in the world, tourists have to be seduced to visit more and more and time and again Indian shores. Karnataka has got the best of the tourist locations, which comparable to Kerala or Rajasthan for that matter. Tourist themes include moonlight trekking, nature trails, sanctuaries, heritage, medical and religious. Karnataka as a destination offers truely an enriching experience with affordable cost unlike other destinations. Home stay concept is fast catching up all over karnataka with Coorg being the leaders in the segment, followed by Hampi. The travel directions in karnataka is one of user friendly, any tourist spot worth its salt is all guided once you hit the highway or the path to the destination. If one is in doubt one has to just get down and utter the name of the destination in English, and people can feel the request and guide, except a few sadistic individuals who misguide the tourist. The cons of the tourism police being inducted into Karnataka is that they are lowly paid with a salary of Rs 5520/, followed without any prosecution powers further handicapping their jurisdiction. The uniform for tourist police should be standardised across India, which is fundamental and basic. I am posting the kerala police uniform, which looks decent enough. I am of the firm opinion that Tourist police should carry all modern gadgets and a pistol to defend the tourist. The salary and perk levels should be decent enough and we should not see such police seeking bhakseesh from the tourist Safety clause to any tourist is to move out only from 7 am to 7 pm in the night in any part of the world. To be more specific it synchronises with the photographic time where the natural sunlight enables good photo shoot ops. Tipping or bakseesh is quite common to ensure prompt service. Foreigners are advised to carry Rs 5 coins in India for tipping. Rest of the advice are commonsense approach. It is always better to carry an umbrella in India to protect against harsh sunlight as well as rain. A lengthy umbrella can serve as an weapon to defend oneself too from snakes and unexpected intruders Lol.
