Saudi Arabia - A Holy Land or a Haven for Jerks or a Big Joke?

Saudi Arabia - A Holy Land or a Haven for Jerks or a Big Joke? When someone tells you about Saudi Arabia or Saudi what immediately comes to your mind?

Who have never been to Saudi Arabia, the very common image would be deserts and camels and Bedouin tribes roaming in caravan with red cheqe head scarves on their head. There may be also images of palm trees and a queue of black hijab clad wives following the tribes headman.

But if you have been to Saudi Arabia you will think of a different image. The desert scene is now almost non existent as the tribes are slowly settling in cities and they prefer to travel in Toyota trucks than in caravans. They have accumulated money and so they have moved from the tents into houses and even villas and palaces. You will still find the queue of hijab clad wives and women following man in spotless white thobe and red chek headgear, but not in oasis but in shopping malls. The man will have a string of beads in his hand but he is not really chanting the name of Allah, he is counting the girls he is eyeing in the shopping mall,

To an intrigued outsider the country as a whole is a hundred times better destination than a Disneyland, the country is a BIG joke and you will constantly get amused.

One of the biggest live amusements comes from "The department of Prevention of Vices and Promotion of Virtues". This is the name of the government department which is manned by Muttawahs also called the religico-politico police. Why it is called religico-politico and not only religico is because these people are mandated to keep an watch on the common population against any uprising or revolt against the monarch and the religion is nothing but a garb.

Now under the constant pressure of "infidel: Americans (who still control the country) and local population the Mutaawahs don't have the sweeping powers they once used to possess and can't actually "pick and flog" a person which were very common even 15 years back if the person were found to do anything which is not according to Islamic diktats.

One good thing about the Muttawahs are they are easily identifiable, normally they will be obese with free flowing beard (never trimmed) and a gown they are allowed to wear over their thobe. They generally roam in cars and normally visit the shopping malls especially during prayer times but now their actual job is covert operations.

Now coming the King, the King whoever is the King, he pretends he is the holiest of men ever stepped this world and "the custodian of two Holy Mosques" is the chosen title which is used when addressing the King. This guy will hardly be giving any statement or taking action concerning welfare of common men, upholding human rights or allowing people to express their opinion freely and the only news that people would know about the King is something like this King Abdullah, the custodian of the two Holy Mosques, received a messaged from the Emir Of Kuwait, a brotherly country of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. There will be complete blackout about any news of queen or queens and Indians may think that the Saudi King is like our Atal Behari Vajpayee but the fact is he will in all probability have al least 20 children, there is nothing wrong in it but why the queens are totally blacked out is beyond comprehension.

There is hardly any rule of law in this country though there is an apparent calm, actually people are always terrorized to do anything the condition of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshis are worst, they live like 4th class citizens. No news of crime are ever reported by press if the crime is not committed by an expat, all Saudis are considered to follow Prophet line by line and therefore no case can be registered against them.

Some of the very amusing things that happen in this country are:

- All shops gets continuously shut and open throughout the day for prayers (five times) and therefore if you are caught in the middle of some transaction, you will be just not done.

- Women compulsorily have to cover themselves in complete black abaya or hijab and they should not be body hugging, in fact the Islamic tradition is they should be highly misleading, women cannot drive and they cannot go out on their own, they have to be accompanied by a blood relation or they will be considered as prostitutes.

- There are no cinema halls in the country and everywhere males and females are segregated starting from banks, to restaurants to parks. This is nothing but making it easy for the offenders to commit crime of women.

- Alcohol is totally banned but every week one brewery is discovered in the house of Saudi rich.

- Though the women are totally covered in abaya and even they use black gloves and socks in peak summer so that a small part of the skin is not shown, you will see continuous photo sessions of women going on in shopping malls and public places.

It is a really fascinating country and so may be all there are true for Saudi Arabia, it is a holy land, it is a haven for jerks and above all it is a BIG joke. If you are not visiting there once, you are missing out a big laugh in your life I can tell you :)

The plight of women in these countries are unimaginable, these women are kept covered and constantly abused in the name of religion, this is a great blog and you have squarely exposed this unholly holy country, actually all countries in middle east are in dark ages and extremely backward in all respect, it does not matter how many sky scrapers or 7 star hotels they build, they are still pretty much the cave men.

spirited wrote on 04 November, 2008

@ maverick, what happens in dubai road side beer bars? they call it beer bars - huh? looks like some intriguing story to be told, any arabian belly dancer dancing with the desert tune in the backdrop of setting sun and a sheik offering her a bunch of Iranian roses?

Can you tell me the fate of women raped in Saudi, it may be worse than Pakistan, or Hari don t tell they don t complain ? LOL

cosmicbomber wrote on 05 November, 2008

@ spirited, it is haram for women in Islam to expose skin or hair before strangers and that's why they have covered themselves up in thick black veils even knowing that identification by their husbands in public places can become difficult.

cosmicbomber wrote on 05 November, 2008

@ derebail, very valid question, yes, some commentators have said that the role of the custodian of two holy mosques is questionable when it comes to the protection of women.

fire wrote on 05 November, 2008

i have also heard that women are shy to wear dress inside house in saudi arabia..lol

Horrified_Harihar wrote on 06 November, 2008

@ dere - well there is a small difference between pakistani and saudi justice, in pakistan there will be no justice at all where as in saudi the rape victim will be stoned to death!

Horrified_Harihar wrote on 06 November, 2008

@ mave - I have not been to dubai but traveled extensively in saudi arabia, kuwait, bharain and oman, so have a pretty good idea and whatever I am writing is based on my first hand experience. Tell us what happens in dubai, will be pleased to be enlightened :)

derebail2009 wrote on 06 November, 2008

@ I am horrified Hari really when you say that the rape victim will be stoned to death in Saudi. That means there is no rule of law and natural justice. Please clarify the stand. Whether you meant it the other way, where the guilty will be punished to death

Horrified_Harihar wrote on 07 November, 2008

@ derebail, I am not joking or telling you a story from Arabian Nights!!! Few years back, a married arab woman was raped by an influential young man in Riyadh, she was raped in a car and thrown out, aftre complaints and all the lower court dismissed the case, the woman was adamant, she complained to higher authorities and the news came out in some press (not Saudi), so the upper court was forced to hear the case, now the most interesting thing is the judgment, the upper court held the man responsible and gave him a jail for 1 year or 2 years but it also came heavily on the woman and ordered her 50 lashes as they found it was immoral for her to be roaming alone and she invited the rape!!! So when I said, Pakistan is better, I really meant it, Saudi Arabia is the most evil country in the world, they understand only one language, the language spoken by George Bush. Rape and torture is rampant and every month poor maids from Philipines, India, Sri Lanka are raped and killed by Saudis.

Horrified_Harihar wrote on 07 November, 2008

In some areas of Riyadh, women will be forced to call mobile numbers of Saudi men, they will surround your car and carry the number written in placards, until the women inside the car calls from her mobile that number, the car will not be released, this is pure terror and is carried out routinely in Riyadh by mens close to the Royal family, they travel in Hummer or Pajero and they don't care unless you belong to an influential Saudi family, it happens routinely on Philipinos, Indians, Pakistanis and nationals of poor Arab counters like Yemen, Egypt etc., they target the cars where are women are travelling with drivers or less male members.

derebail2009 wrote on 07 November, 2008

@ Hari, thanks for clarification, i don t know one of my friend and his wife have gone there to work, may be they are game for it. I think it is all in the Islamic traditions to hunt your prey. The law of the jungle prevails I suppose. I remember 30 years back an Arab offered a job to my colleague because he had beautiful arse. He was offered something like 2 lakhs per month. You can guess what was his intention.

Hari, thanks for the very informative blog on Saudi Arabia, Saudi and Pakistan are the two main players of global terrorism, Saudi is the financial sponsor and Pakistan is responsible for operations, if any world leader is really keen to eradicate terrorism then they have to strike these two places first, regarding the holy land question, I can say that the House of Saud and the Wahabis are solely responsible for the bad name that Islam has earned today, they are are sponsors of Islamic Jehad and they are continuously helping some poor, misguided youths by brainwashing them in the name of religion and using them for the purpose of exploiting the people of Arab, the global Islamic terrorism will stop at once the house of Saud falls.

Hari, please accept my cascading kudos for revealing such important aspect of life in Saudi Arabia, I am still waiting for maverick to shed some lights on Dubai street bars!

cosmicbomber wrote on 08 November, 2008

@ RP Singh - Saudi is officially following all Halal practices but if there is an undercurrent of Haram, that is regrettable!!

@ spirited..dubai is cool place..there are two hindu temples in dubai city which sheikh mohammed himself had approved and given permission to maintain. there are many churches here as well..we can find lot of girls with small dress on streets..though drinking and walking / driving on roads are banned..there are few dance bars in city with government permission..there are few arabic channels in which i have seen love meter the one we see in hindi channels also are shown...also happened to see today a music channel of arabic in which girl sings and dances almost with two piece concept...though dubai says they restrict contents in net and tv.....lol..

derebail/spirited - Thanks, I will write some other aspect (positives) of Saudi society in my next blog but definitely the negatives outweigh the positives, actually common people are good but they are being exploited and poisoned by the rulers in the name of religion.

The rulers are the biggest hypocrites and they are abusing the religion for their personal gain and US is the biggest accomplice, as RP said, if there is need to to take action against any country, I think the first name should be Saudi Arabia as they are the biggest and worst violators of human rights.

One funny incident happened, dogs are usually hated but they are used for sniffing bombs to keep the King and his chamchas safe, I asked one Saudi guy once why they don't use monkeys instead of dogs (the greatest friend of humans are "haram" to them), he got furious with me - lolz!

Horrified_Harihar wrote on 09 November, 2008

@ Rajesh, the whole middle east is more or less same, half of Saudi men spend their weekends in Bahrain / Dubai and the prostitutes you mentioned are in high demand during the weekends. All rulers are more or less same, hypocrites and they only understand "danda" language of president Bush, these buggers in UAE are no angels. Dubai is a now global center of vice, by the way there is something called temporary marriage in Islam and so it is legal for muslims to get a girl, screw her and leave her. It is not a free society as you are portraying, freedom is something which is unknown in Islamic country, you go to Holland, Germany, or Sweden you will understand the meaning of freedom, there the rule is same for everyone, in Amsterdam you can choose a girl who are showcased in glass boxes under blue light but it is your choice whether you want to have, but everyone has that right, in Dubai if an ordinary Hindu worker screws a local muslim girl then even God cannot save you, I think u know!!

iam_rajesh wrote on 09 November, 2008

@ HARI,..Yes ..i had been to norway recently and had Sexperienced little..lol..i also had freedom u say when i was in miami..we just need to prove that we are above 18 when we enter clubs..after that no one really bothers which citizen are we and whether we are dressed or not dressed..thats european american culture..in dubai one can't get such freedom..and in US i had seen literally full nude bars both for men and women..lol..no idea about other countries..

I suppose this is the rape case you are referring to http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article3064649.ece

Their harsh laws; like cutting off the hand for stealing; but that doesn't deter Saudis from stealing from from super markets, especially women in abayas; they will slip in what ever that fits into their abayas. The shop cannot employ females, so no females can be frisked or searched. The shops very rarely call the cops; and they have a good reason not to. The work permits are issued based on the roles. So you have a salesman/shop assistant, driver , plumber, cook..... The law permits only salesmen in shops, but shop owners put everyone available in to attend the customers. If cops come these 'illegal' salesmen have to be hidden, which means loss of business and interruptions. So they just ignore it. Then you have this smart Saudis who pay 10 riyals for something that costs 5 and ask for 95 back ,as if they gave a 100 rials initially.

francis_ouseph wrote on 12 November, 2008

Harihar, they dont give a damn if you are Hindu or Muslim. What matters is that you are an Arab and a Saudi. You can be a Muslim from Kerala and they will treat you no better.

Sheikhs and their brats already have many wives but want more, so there is Dubai and Bahrain, Lebanese, Russians, Fillipinos..you find whores of all nationalities.

A jerk like you can only write such nonsense. What is your problem? Do you support the culture when a husband will allow his wife to display her flesh so that he can pimp her? You should be ashamed of India first and then bother about other countries.
