Mamata Banerjee Conducts Bengal's First Opera at TMC's First Brigade Rally

Mamata Banerjee Conducts Bengal's First Opera at TMC's First Brigade Rally Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal who came to power in May this year converted Trinamool Congress's 21st July Martyr Day into the First ever opera in the history of Bengal.

It was unfortunate that the Brigade Rally record of assembly could not be broken as it was widely anticipated. Only about 2-3 Lacs of TMC supporters braved inclement weather to come to the historic Brigade Parade Ground to express solidarity with the martyrs. But instead they witnessed the Bengal's first opera conducted by the lady almost extempore!

It appeared that the primary focus was to pay respect to the film fraternity comprising of Ranjit Mallick, Dipanker De, Tapas Pal, Deboshree Roy, Satabdi Roy, Chiranjeet, Prasenjit, his father once Bollywood's No. 1 hero Biswajit and some other sundries along with some pet group of artists and filmmakers like Shuvaprasanna, Samir Aich, Horonath Ckaraborty who were all greeted by Mamata Banerjee on arrival and then offered some muffler kind of a stuff with a gift set. Then Mamata played the role of a MC cum conductor of the Opera and called each one of them on stage and requested them to say something, or recite some poem or even some film dialogues.

One singer called Nachiketa sang a song and I could not identify the accompanying guitarist but certainly he can give Eric Clapton a run for his money. It was a wonderful mega show and the Indian Cinema's first ever item girl Deboshree Roy of "Kolkata'r Roshogolla" fame also gave a hip swaying performance accompanied by some Rabindra Sangeet.

Mamata's love for tinseltown actors, artists and poets was at peak and she ignored all other ministers of her cabinet but was very affectionate towards West Bengal's higher education minister Bratya Basu who is also a theater artist. Biswajeet, put his own lyrics into a song of the legendary Sachin Dev Burman and sang few notes and who can tell that we were observing a martyr's day.

There was no question of remembering the martyrs (hooligans who were killed in police firing when they were vandalizing public property) or observing a minute's silence or anything of that sort generally done to remember the dead. It was a thanksgiving ceremony of a bunch of aging Toolywood stars who are almost forgotten.

The people were becoming increasingly impatient as they were prepared to hear from Mamata and not prepared for the maiden opera that unfolded in Brigade ground. So Mamata herself took the mike and scolded the supporters who were getting impatient and even threatened that she will go back home if they are not behaving properly.

Finally the showbiz came to an end as all the stars and celebrities were fully utilized, some sang, some danced, some recited poems and some just showered praise for the chief minister and then finally she took the dais to speak to the public.

She thanked the Maa, Maati and Manush for the historic victory and told how she has already solved the problems of hills (Gorkhaland) and jangalmahal (Maoists) in just 60 days. Also she mentioned that the promise of returning land to farmers of Singur (where the Nano factory was supposed to be built) was in an advanced stage.

The she gave some instructions to the people which were very crisp and clear although some of them may be startling to many.

1. She advised all to practice roja with the Muslim brothers in the holy month of Ramjan starting August, she stressed the point 3 times.

2. To play Rabindra sangeet (Tagore's song) during 7th, 8th and 9th August all over Bengal to commemorate his day of demise.

3. Asked the opposition communists to not to open their mouth for 10 years, don't utter a word she said and it will keep you in good health.

4. Whenever someone is passing by a hospital, one should pick up a broom and clean the hospital entrance and yard.

5. In general, imbibe the thinking of Rabindranath and Nazrul in daily life.

In addition she said that she is going to upgrade the 10,000 madrasas in Bengal and help them financially, make Urdu the 2nd language in Muslim dominated areas and was short of suggesting to play 1 Narulgeeti for every 2 Rabindrasangeet played.

Rizanul's mother was the only non-film attraction of the Opera and the lady read out in Urdu from a script praising Mamata and calling her a "beti".

The opera ended with the Chief Minister delivering a rap like performance uttering slogans of Trinamul and mixing them with the names of Tapash Pal, Deboshree Roy and Satabdi Roy. The supporters slowly returned to their homes hoping that next time Didi will be able to break the record of assembly in brigade rally organized by communists leaders like Pramod Dasgupta, Jyoti Basu and Biddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

CB@Ms Mamata Banerjee is running short of words while expressing her gratitude towards the muslim community. She has got an uncanny knack of oiling the Muslims even without any valid reasons. May be she knows that with her government's patronage the Muslims in West Bengal would shortly outnumber the Hindus. The one important point which she is missing is that in this process West Bengal would become another Bangladesh in the near future and Ms Banerjee would be responsible for another division of Bengal. Then the Muslims might demand a separate state and the Hindus would again be driven out from West Bengal to protect their own religion.Hindus have had already suffered a lot in 1947. Ms Banerjee had requested all non muslims to do Roja during Romzan. Would she dare to ask the Muslims for a fast( Upabash) during Ram Navami or Janmastomi? Her eagerness to give 10000 Madrasas official status would worsen the law and order situation of West Bengal. She is yet to mature as a politician.

If you have watched the live telecast very carefully you would have noticed that she said at the end "dhanyabad, khuda hafeez, insha allah" which clearly indicates she is just appeasing the Muslims without knowing even what these words stand for!

@ Psing, did you watch the Opera?

Fullmarx@ TMC gives importance to Rizanul's mother. Rizanul Ramaman was not a famous person, he did not die for his country. He simply managed to brainwash a girl from a rich Marwari hindu family, got her married to him against the wish of her parents, took her to the slum where he used to live and afterwords died due to causes not known. His only qualification is that he was a MUSLIM. If this happened with a Hindu, then definitely this would have not attracted so much attention. If the reverse thing had happened then I am sure Ms Mamata Banerjee would never ever had brought the parents of the deceased on the dais. It is not known why the political parties are so much scared of the muslims. Reports from different intelligence agencies confirmed that West Bengal is now a safe place for the Islamic terrorists. Through the porous borders of West Bengal, infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims take place on daily basis.Only god can save us.

@fullmarx, Mamata is certainly doing better job than Jyoti or Buddha and we should give her some time, we can't expect change overnight after the misrule of 34 years.

One very good thing she has done is that the government is categorical about not letting any real estate development happening on industrial lands, your communists were in hand in gloves with the builders, the cadres closed the industries by labour strike and then your leaders helped the Neotias and Bajorias to convert the factory land into real estate and making windfall gain at the cost of poor labourer's livelihood and that is what your pro-working class communist government did in the last 3 decades. You should be ashamed man.

The industry minister has said that he will not consider educational institute or hospitals as industry so that the factory lands can be grabbed and converted into DPS franchise or another super specialty hospital like Medica!

I am not surprised at such antics. This is exactly how the script is played in politics all accross the sub-continent, barring a few exceptions here and there with the characters and the songs and dances.

I find it amusing to see that the party which finally manages to take power after many years likes to call their opponents' time in government as "misrule". Someone should ask them what were you doing during the 34 years of misrule? Why did the public not trust you instead chose to keep the misrulers in power? And if it was indeed misrule how did they manage to stay in power so long?

I must say this categorisation is not unique to the sub-continent. Recently, the right-wing coalition won the elections in NSW by defeating Labour after 13 years; their pet phrase now is "13 years of Labour misrule".

Khair, I m surprised how you can comment that Mamata Banerjee is doing a better job. She has become a laughing stock because of her flip-flops and it is not me all political pundits have commented that she has failed in the transition from agitation oriented politics to governance. She is a misguided missile and all political parties are scared to do any business with her. There is no hierarchy in the party, she is just one man show and every one has to toe her line or will be shown the door.

I did not say Mamata Banerjee is doing a better job. What I had said is right above yours. You can read it again if you like.
