Abdur-Rahim Jackson, a black American dancer with a Muslim first name was made to dance by Israeli airport security staff before they let him into the country.
Abdur-Rahim Jackson, of the Alvin Ailey troupe, was interrogated for an hour at Ben-Gurion airport near Tel Aviv. The airport has one of the tightest security regimes in the world, and any passenger who falls in a negative profile has to face grueling interrogation on the way in and out of Israel. The Israeli security system is known to be one of the toughest in the world and they show no leniency to anyone which can compromise nation's security interest. Abdur-Rahim must have been fallen in the negative profile and so the security asked him all sort of questions. He showed security staff his photos in the troupe brochure but to no avail. The renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre company is at the beginning of a six-nation international tour which includes seven performances in Tel Aviv opening on Tuesday night. Only after he showed his interrogators few dance moves, the were convinced that he was no Islamic terrorist. Abdur-Rahim had to dance actually two times as they called a renowned Israeli dance master to check out his steps. It is however not revealed that for how many minutes did Abdur-Rahim danced at the immigration office and what all moves he made. I think there will be immense interest worldwide to know more about this foot loose. Comments (6) Login to post your comment Comfortably_dumb wrote on 11 September, 2008
Didn't he file a defamation lawsuit?

I also read about this in USA Today and apparently he is okay with this... he said it happened to him before in the US airport once while returning from a vacation, in fact he thinks now that he should get used to dancing at airports!

Why Miss Dumb the question of defamation is coming? Please allow security people to do their job as otherwise it will happen like India, Isreal is a very small country surrounded by hostile countries harbouring Islamic terrorists and they have to act tough, so please don't rake up issues of rights, they have asked him to dance and what's wrong with it??? Do you know what Daler Mehendi is doing? He is running an illegal immigration racket and sending people to Amercia, had the American immigration performed this Dance Check they would have been caught.

I feel that profiling a person according to his ethnical identity is quite humiliating.

Miss Dumb, I also used to think like that but now if some people are hell bent to blow themselves up in the name of religion which promises Rajesh's dozens of "real virgins" in heaven there is nothing much security agency can do, they have to stop the killing and make the country secure, since they cannot search or interrogate each and every people they have to do some profiling, I am afraid. Israel is a tough country and they are not a soft state like India. Kudos to them, they always help India and they helped us to win the Kargil war.

Holy Cow! This is a unique method for the fight against terror, it is something like Gandhian non-violence cocktailed with Jewish humour.
