Indonesia faces severe alcohol shortage as Lucy Williamson of BBC news reports this unprecedented crisis from Jakarta.
This shortage is attributed to the growing trend of Indonesian Muslims and Muslimas developing taste for wines and spirits ignoring the the warning of scholars of Islam who have declared alcohol as haram. But the administration gives a different reason, they say the real cause is an anti-corruption drive. A few months ago, the government decided to clamp down on the huge black market in alcohol, and to stop companies bribing their way through customs. That left the country's sole legal importer trying to meet a demand that is more than four times the size of its legal quotas. But everyone understands that in a state that is home to the world's largest population of Muslims, the job of the government becomes very tough specially in issues like alcohol and free social mixing which mullahs consider as enemies of Islam. Government officials admit they want to discourage consumption; that they are worried about Indonesians drinking more; that it needs strict regulation. But Miranti, an Indonesian and a devout Muslim disagrees. "I think it depends on the person themselves," she told BBC's journalist, "because I haven't seen many people staggering out of a bar or restaurant, blind drunk, or throwing up on the street. We don't drink to get drunk." Well, when substance like alcohol starts to find root in a modern urban culture, the answer is not easy, it is a real tough job ahead to persuade young Muslims and Muslimas to give up drinking as they see nothing wrong with it. But as the crisis of shortage deepens government must liberalize alcohol import as otherwise the economy would be hurt more. The head of Bali;s tourist board says his members are getting increasingly worried as the Christmas high season approaches. Another bar manager of one of the best international hotel put it: "We'll be dry by the weekend." Government is in a fix, it can import more alcohol but can it ask Indonesians not to drink? No way!!
