India's political leadership to blame: Wall Street Journal

India's political leadership to blame: Wall Street Journal It is nothing new but the world has taken notice and the editorial of one of the world's most powerful and respected newspaper puts the blame on Sonia led Congress party which is at the helm of affairs in India.

India's ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has done little to launch an effective fight against terrorism and may "pay a price for its incompetence" in the elections next year, the Wall Street Journal said in its lead editorial on Friday.

"A lack of political leadership is to blame," The Wall Street Journal said as India's financial capital continued to battle terrorists who had struck in 10 places in the city Wednesday.

The Mumbai terror attacks, in which at least 125 people have been killed, have been covered extensively in both the print and online edition of this New York-based daily financial newspaper.

"It (the ruling party) may pay a price for its incompetence at the national polls next year," the newspaper said.

'Yesterday Prime Minister Manmohan Singh promised that "every perpetrator would pay the price". Yet his Congress Party has done little more than bicker with its coalition allies over the past five years on how best to fight terrorism,' the journal said.

Observing that the attacks are a reminder that India is at the top of the terror target list, the newspaper said this is because India is an easy target.

India is not only an easy target but a very weak state and that is encouraging even countries Bangaldesh to send terror missions to India.

Not only are its intelligence units understaffed and lack resources, coordination among State police forces is also poor. The country's anti-terror legal architecture is highly inadequate. There is no preventive detention law, and prosecutions can take years. And we have our secular leaders, plenty of them, either they are wimps or corrupt and they are on a mission to maximize their personal property during their stay in power.

"Wednesday's attacks should arouse Indians to better confront the terror threat, while reminding all democracies how dangerous that threat still is," WSJ said.

In another opinion piece published by The Journal, author Sadanand Dhume blamed the Congress for scrapping the anti-terror law POTA. "On taking office in 2004, one of the first acts of the ruling Congress Party was to scrap a federal antiterrorism law that strengthened witness protection and enhanced police powers," he wrote.

'The Congress Party has stalled similar state-level legislation in Gujarat, which is ruled by the opposition Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. And it was a Congress government that kowtowed to fundamentalist pressure and made India the first country to ban Mumbai-born Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" in 1988,' he said.

Dhume, a Washington-based writer and author of "My Friend the Fanatic: Travels with an Indonesian Islamist", said the Indian approach to terrorism has been consistently haphazard and weak-kneed.

Actually, most of the Indians are aware that their country is now being ruled by a bunch of ineffective, incompetent and corrupt politicians and so this editorial or survey is nothing like a surprise. It is also worth to be noted that a large section of intelligentsia is also immoral and corrupt and they are helping these politicians at center. They can do anything to appease Muslims and make sure that they get their votes which will ensure their seats of power.

But now after so many high value hostages from powerful countries in the world are being killed in Mumbai, the lack of intent is very much on focus and the heat will be on the Italian lady and her group of personal man servants who form the the majority of the Indian cabinet.

Hello Major I agree with the opinion of this post. I am sure the mandate will turn the tide against the ruling party, but i feel we should have a good and strong leader in the opposition. Advani does not really inspire confidence, people like Ravi shankar and likes should be explored to be an alternative

"It is also worth to be noted that a large section of intelligentsia is also immoral and corrupt and they are helping these politicians at center."...which is why they became targets in this attack.

Holy Cow! I didn't know that Mumbai's immoral intelligentsia were discussing art and politics, sitting on the platform floor of Chaatrapati Sivaji Terminal! And even they were, does it give anyone right to load bazookas and start mayhem? Are we talking about a civilized society by any chance or I am totally misplaced?

Good argument spirited and nice blog Major Singh.

Fanatical Islam is a serious problem. However when a significant element of its roots lie in the unholy alliance of the US and the Saudi royal families mutual support mechanism.

It was not Christian, Hindu or Jewish believers who bombed or otherwise attacked NYC, London, Madrid, Tel Aviv, Mumbai, Bali, Nairobi, etc. It was Islamic fascists who want to impose their version of Islam on the rest of the world including fellow Muslims. These worshipers of death are a global security threat. Very soon, Indian leaders (if there is any) will learn that Islamic terrorism was not a mere fantasy of President Bush.

@ cosmicbomber, you got it absolutely right... The root cause is that Islamic fascism is founded on the belief that Islam is superior to all other belief systems, either religious or secular. Even if economic inequalities were eliminated in the global economy, the death cult of Islamic fascism would still seek global dominion. We have to hit hard at the root but one positive point should be mentioned that a very few people within the Muslim faith subscribe to this fascism. This fascism is funded by a small group of complete authoritarian families from Middle East who love to call themselves as kings for their own self interest.

y dont any of the hindus launch war against terror in the name of india..y always muslim alone launch jihad attack...in the name of allah...if allah can encourage war against peace loving people, god krishna also encourages fight against people who create war..this is not war against any community but cruel game by some people in the name of god..we either need to convert our country to non muslim residents and all muslims be given identity if they wish to still stay or let them be deported to muslim preferred nations..i am not against our muslim brothers in our country..but situation makes us think so..when muslim countries can issue id card for every single person entering their countries who are not their fellow country people, y should india not do same thing..we need military rule in center and dont need any old politicians..this will bring situation under control.

@ Fire, this will precisely happen very soon as Indians have lost all faith in politicians, and believe me many Muslims will also join the Hindus as all Muslims are not disciples of Osama Bin Laden, Mullah Omar or Imam of Jama Masjid. There are many intellectuals, pragmatics and nationalist Muslims who are even serving army, but the ones like Shabana Azmi, Javed Akthar and Pataudi who get publicity are nothing but greedy opportunists and because of these hypocrites the majority of the Muslim in India are still illiterate.

@ RP, just saw the message of President Bush on TV, "The people of India are strong and India can count on US", yes, we can count on Americans and Israelis as they are the real friend of India, India needs US and Israel to fight Islamic Jehadis which is hell bent to destroy India. They have already done a quite a lot of damage, Indian hotels will not be considered safe any more and the security situation is already being compared that with of Pakistan.

Mr Singh, you have missed out two more culprits, they are the IB chief and our National Security Adviser, both of them should be sacked immediately and tried for gross negligence.

President Bush said, "The killers who struck this week are brutal and violent, but terror will not have the final word. People of India are resilient. People of India are strong. They have built a vibrant, multiethnic democracy that can withstand this trial. Their financial capital of Mumbai will continue to be the center of commerce and prosperity.”

Mr. Bush held a video-teleconference on Saturday regarding the terror attacks in Mumbai with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Ambassador David Mulford, Consul General Paul Folmsbee in Mumbai, and several others on the national security team.

"We reviewed the latest developments, and we are working to ensure that American citizens in India are safe," Mr. Bush said, adding that he kept President-Elect Obama informed.

Bush concluded, "As the people of the world’s largest democracy recover from these attacks, they can count on the world’s oldest democracy to stand by their side."
