Halal and Haram for Dummies

Halal is a Quranic Term, which means 'Lawful' or 'Permitted'. Sometimes it is translated as 'Acceptable' or 'Not forbidden'. Halal foods and drinks are permitted for consumption by Allah, the supreme lawgiver. In the Holy Quran, Allah commands Muslims and all of mankind to eat of the Halal things. Eating Halal is obligatory.

The opposite of 'Halal' is 'Haram', which means 'Unlawful' or 'Prohibited". The other words used for Haram is 'Unacceptable' or 'Forbidden'. Haram foods and drinks are absolutely prohibited for consumption by Allah. Eating Haram is forbidden for every Muslim. If a Muslim consumes Haraam foods, he would be sinful.

Practices are also divided into Halal and Haram and the list below is compiled from various sources, the principal being one magnificent site called Beautiful Islam which provides free knowledge on Islam to all faiths.

<< HALAL >>

Milk (from cows, sheeps, camels or goats)
Plants which are not intoxicant
Fresh or naturally frozen vegetables
Fresh or dried fruits
Legumes like peanuts, cashew nuts, hazel nuts, walnuts, etc.
Grains such as wheat, rice, rye, barley, oat, etc.

<< HARAM >>

Pig/Swine/Pork and its by-products
Blood and and blood by-products
Carnivorous animals
Reptiles and insects
Halal animals which are not slaughtered according Islamic Law
Animals killed in the name of anyone other than God
The bodies of dead animals or dead before slaughtering
Alcohol and intoxicants such as Wine, Alcohol, and Spirits etc.
Wrigley's Chewing Gum

Practices that are HARAM and should be totally shunned

Artificial Insemination
Astrology, Palmistry, Optical Telepathy
Celebrating Birthdays
Human Cloning
Music and All Musical Instruments (excepting duff according to some scholars)
Mechanical Slaughtering of Chickens
Valentine's Day

ps. Another very high order haram is Television which I have omitted.

The Council of Islamic Scholars (Majlisul Ulama) of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, have published a booklet on Islam and television in which they list the factors present in television that are unlawful or offensive.

In the face of this formidable array of evil factors and harmful effects no one can have any doubt of the illegality of television in Islam. Television, as has been seen, is an embodiment of sin and immorality. Islam can never condone or permit an institution that plays havoc with the spiritual, mental, and moral development of mankind.

cosmicbomber wrote on 28 October, 2008

They found these 16 points against television:

1. pictures of animate objects and picture making;

2. music;

3. immorality, nudity, illicit sex, pornography, etc;

4. obscene language;

5. incitement to fornication;

6. negation of haya (modesty);

7. scenes of violence, sadism, and crime in general portrayed;

8. the addictive influence exercised by TV;

9. it encourages the acceptance of aggression as a mode of behavior;

10. it encourages imitation of the crimes portrayed;

11. the brainwashing action of TV, especially on the young;

12. it stunts intellectual growth;

13. it wastes time;

14. it interferes with one's religious duties and one's necessary and important worldly duties;

15. it diverts one's attention from the remembrance of Allah;

16. and it falls under the category described by Islam as lahw (pointless amusement). (Majlisul Ulama)

Bollocks!! These people have no other work, what about multiple marriages, child marriage and temporary marriage? Are they Halal???? It is ridiculous that TV and Chewing gum are haram, please don't take my words as religious statements, I am just trying to tell from a common man's perspective, I think millions of muslims watch TV around the world and it is utter nonsense to call it haram.

Holy Cow! CosmicBomber, I think any Islamic scholar will give you cascading kudos for your knowledge!! By the way, what is "Duff"? I have never heard about this musical instrument!!!

Ranger wrote on 28 October, 2008

Will it not be more sensible to blame the programs (if at all) than the Television itself? You can also beam people praying in TV and other educational programs and not necessarily what the 16 points you have mentioned!

fire wrote on 28 October, 2008

am not against any religion..but well, though muslims follow haram / halal,,is there anything like killing human with bomb is supporting halal or haram..hitting building with plane is halal or haram..marrying 5 girl does it not express how much sex drive they have without watching tv or porn sites or that tempts porn...nowadays even gulf countries have their own pop musicians..and they do sing lot of love songs....islam rules say not to collect u know dubai is one of the country among top lists where rent is highest than many other countries..its within top 10 countries where rent is high...lets not make this site now religious argument site after having argued on languages.

cosmicbomber wrote on 28 October, 2008

@ Fire, ask you to direct your questions to Mr Mufti Ebrahim Desai, Head of Fatwa Dept., you can get his email from BeautifulIslam site and also there are lots of resource in which is maintained by Imam Deasi, Thanks. I am not so knowledgeable to answer each and every questions as I am just quoting from these learned scholar's writings.

cosmicbomber wrote on 28 October, 2008

@ Fire, if you read the blog and the explanation of these learned scholars then it is crystal clear that "pop song" is a haram. @ ranger, you are right when you say the TV programs, but there are few halal programs in TVs nowadays.

cOsmic bomber now i can say proudly welcome to admanya Lol You have made your mark here. @ Ranger Pak has been under various laws from time to time

Ranger wrote on 28 October, 2008

One things is baffling that why Wrigley's chewing gum has been singled out, do they use some pork stuff in their gums? What about Orbit and other brands? Equally baffling is celebrating birthdays also falls under the banned list!

Ranger wrote on 28 October, 2008

@ derebail, why is that so? I mean why are you welcoming cosmicbomber now?? I was actually shocked when he wrote something about tantric practice!

derebail2009 wrote on 28 October, 2008

spirited wrote on 28 October, 2008

Holy Cow! If senior bloggers like derebail surrender then one can understand the plight of apprentices like me! Ranger, tried to counter cosmic but he is also been silenced by bomber's unconventional aggression!!

fire wrote on 28 October, 2008

however u kill an animal whether with injection or with sword,,finally its killing..and its sin to kill any animal..bullocks saying halal...same muslim guys are killing more human beings with bomb and destroyed many name of allah they say they are declaring war...are they not inhuman in islam..

Ranger wrote on 28 October, 2008

@ spirited, why derebail has to surrender??? What is the actual problem, not getting, I don't think that anybody can silence anyone as this is a public forum, whatever has been written about haram is just not practical proposition for a normal person to follow and I am sure very people follow them!!

cosmicbomber wrote on 28 October, 2008

@ Derebail, please address me clearly your concern about my blog, my blog is packed with facts and interpretation given by learned scholars of distinction, so you need not feel threatened and that would be the most irrational thing, if you have any concerns I would try my level best to address them at the earliest, thank you very much and wish you a very happy diwali night!

cosmicbomber wrote on 28 October, 2008

@ derebail, reg. more details of halal and haram, please address your query to Imam Mufti Ebrahim Desai, Head of Fatwa Dept.,available at - Thanks.

cosmicbomber wrote on 28 October, 2008

@ FIRE reg. animal slaughter, Al Shaddad Bin Aous has quoted this tradition of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) "God calls for mercy in everything, so be merciful when you kill and when you slaughter, sharpen your blade to relieve its pain".

Syed Rasheeduddin Ahmed says that even Kosher meat is not halal and therefore what you suggested "injectioned" meat is haram of a very high order. He argues, unlike in Islam, where any adult sane Muslim can slaughter an animal by following the rules prescribed by Shariah, in Judaism only one kind of Rabbi, known as the Sachet, may slaughter Kosher animals. The Sachet is specially trained for this purpose and no other Jew can slaughter an animal.

He advices, If a Muslim is not in danger of death, he must avoid eating haram food at any cost. If halal meat is not available, one can eat fish or vegetables or can even go to the slaughter house to slaughter an animal himself.

Horrified_Harihar wrote on 29 October, 2008

Bollocks!!! Who said there are no Halal programs?? You want to see Halal programs in TV?? Watch PTV or SaudiTV, you will get 100% halal shows, the full channels are Halal!!! LOL :-) This blog is now attracting all sorts of Halal blogsites as ads!!! Complete chaos which is definitely not Halal - LOL :-) Really amusing to know about halal and haram!!

spirited wrote on 29 October, 2008

Holy Cow!!!! Height of desperation, that the "learned scholar" is advising Muslim "go to the slaughter house to slaughter an animal himself", is there no other halal food on earth that can be eaten if meat is not found at a particular place for some reason. @cosmic, how come you have gained so much religious knowledge, I wonder!!

Luckiee wrote on 29 October, 2008

I agree Horrified_Harihar 100% with you even I am from a muslim family. I dont care if somebody take it as my words as religious harassments statements also. The worlds No: 1 fools are Muslims. They are following a pedophile's rules. can any muslim prove muhammed has not married a minor girl? and history says he had 14 wives! those things are halal and whatever human being is doing that is harams. Are muslims saying muhammed never touched liquors (wined included) Muhammed also consumpted liquors and banned in a term (hadiths proves). I agree a thing that is Pig/Swine/Pork and it's product are haram (this was harams in old testament also) Quran is mearly a copy of old testament. And muhammed created a new religion. If Wrigley's Chewing Gum is in haram list there should be some more haram products also which is now edible and not black listed by islamic crackers!

RP_Singh wrote on 29 October, 2008

Luckiee, there is a book on this minor girl which you are talking about, please read it, "The Jewel of Medina", though it is a fiction but based on some research about the time.

Luckiee wrote on 30 October, 2008

I have already read the book "The Jewel of Medina" written by Sherry Jones, that is a historical novel. This was not giving adequate answer for my verse that is Muhammed is a pedophile. and this is not a good answer for all of my queries!

sharmila wrote on 05 November, 2008

hello luckiee, why are you so angry with your religion? any bad experience?

cosmicbomber wrote on 14 May, 2010

I forgot to add that any form of "Night vision" instruments including binocular are also HARAM.

maaz_nawaz wrote on 15 May, 2010

Dear Cosmic bomber thanks for sharing your useful & interesting views on Halal & Haram. It's nice to read so many views from members....

In short, Halal - That which Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) have allowed to be done in a lawful manner.

Haram - That which Allah and the Prophet have completely and specifcally forbidden. Engaging in an act that is Haram (i.e. eating food like pork, drinking alcohol, having sex outside of marriage) would lead to punishment in the Next Life, and maybe even in this Life.

maaz_nawaz wrote on 15 May, 2010

When something is Halal, it is allowed, but not necessarily commanded. When something is Haram, it is definitely prohibited and not allowed to be used unless there are extreme cases when there is dire need for them.

Khair wrote on 11 December, 2011

Then there is another category called "Makrooh" - that which is discouraged, but not forbidden, for example, shrimps, prawns and lobsters are makrooh to the best of my knowledge, but try to get a Bengali Muslim stay away from shrimps, prawns and lobsters.

Vani wrote on 11 December, 2011
