Dr. Terry Jones - The New American Hero

Posted by cosmicbomber on 10 September 2010

Dr. Terry Jones - The New American Hero US pastor Dr. Terry Jones has called off plans by his church to burn hundreds of copies of the Koran on the anniversary of 9/11 attacks.

Jones told reporters: "The imam has agreed to move the mosque, we have agreed to cancel our event on Saturday." He was accompanied by Imam Muhammad Musri, head of the Islamic Society of Central Florida. He added: "I, with [Musri], will be flying up [to New York] on Saturday to meet with [Feisal Abdul Rauf] at the Ground Zero mosque."

He added that Americans don't want the mosque at ground zero and Muslims don't want us to burn Korans and so we have agreed to not go ahead with the Koran burning as Imam assured to relocate the mosque.

Jones has become an American hero after this event which unnerved the entire world and the top politicians including President Obama, Secretary of State Clinton and US Generals weighed in to persuade Dr. Jones to call of the Koran bonfire. Although Dr. Jones admitted that he shared then concern of generals that the event could have lead to backlash on Americans soldiers and American travelers but he also added that various secret service agents contacted him from Afghanistan telling him the full support of soldiers behind the event.

Dr. Jones is an international figure now after confronting radical Islam head on and receiving huge support as well as attention worldwide. Probably he has put his life on stake and may have a restricted life like the Danish cartoonist.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf keeps his words or the entire world will witness a lot of turbulence in the future. It is a relief that by calling of the event, a lot of innocent lives have been saved and hope the deal is not broken.

The time has come for Muslim leaderships (and specially from the religious heads) to climb down on supremacy of Islam and respect other religions equally as they want Islam to respected. Hope we see temples, churches and synagogues to be built in Saudi Arabia and the followers of other religion are not harassed. This was very much needed and hope the educated Muslim denounce their religious leaders for being narrow minded and develop harmonious relationships with people of all religion throughput the world.

Dear friend Cosmicbomber, regarding Dr Terry Jones, My opinion differs. I never consider him as a hero. He has been in tops news almost every day for the last couple of weeks, but for all the wrong reasons.Book burning is abhorrent, any book, holy or otherwise. Hope here at least you agree with me....

I have never seen any Muslim burning the Bible, then why burn Quran? They hurt the feelings of Muslims all over the world. All this stupid act of him will arouse only hatred & when Muslim around the world will retaliate they will call it terrorism.

In short,

"Burn a Koran day" will achieve the following for sure -

* Increase in global hatred for America and Americans.
* Will show that America is totally inconsiderate for other religions.
* Will endanger our troops and other Americans in Muslim countries.
* Will give more material to radical Muslim leaders to brain wash people to become terrorists.
* Will make the World a lot less safer place than it is!
* Will make Rev. Jones be compared to haters like Hitler who hated a whole religion!

Dear friend Maaz_Nawaz,he is an American hero because he is fighting for American people and their sentiments. I agree, burning any religious symbol is offending the faithfuls of that religion but there should be an equal standard which a lot of people think are not there.

Also, why the Muslims will take up arms against a symbolic protest? This is the difference between a civilized world and a world that still lives in medieval times, any violent reaction to any symbolic protest is not warranted at all whether committed by Muslims, Hindus or people of any faith.

America hasn't issued the 'Burn a Koran' offer. It was issued by some fanatic pastor. If tomorrow anyone starts 'Burn a Bible' also they won't be stopped either and that's the sign of true liberty for their citizens. The administration has requested to stop the process and i think its a good gesture.
The Islamic community so far hasn't issued and death threat for pastor and if True Islam followers can find peaceful solution for people who go against them the whole world will be a more peaceful place.
Humanity is the next religion and peace for all should be its motto.
Burning a book is not as sinful as burning a live human being.

Islam is used an a political agenda by many and so this is a political reaction which I tend to believe after reading views from both sides.

Why don't you call upon the leaders of Muslim world if there is any to 1) give up the claim of religious supremacy, 2) to allow people of all other faith practice their religion. If you respect others, automatically others will respect you.

I have nothing against Muslims or the religion of Islam and there are inconsistencies and dark chapters in every religion, but the biggest problem is that Muslims expect others to be tolerant where as they are themselves most intolerant about other religion. The glaring example is any Muslim countries.

Every Muslim support the mosque at the Ground Zero site, but what about building a temple in Saudi Arabia? There are lacs of Hindus who are working there for decades and helped the country to prosper, is it too much to expect? Please answer this question.

@ Nashbloom - I read a very interesting comment in Facebook yesterday. One person wrote:

"If I announce to burn a Bible how many death threats would I get?"

Then he also gave a clue ;)

Clue: "The answer is less than 1".

This explains all. Taliban has already declared that they will kill any Americans anywhere even if they are innocent if the Koran is burnt. So, is it how you deal and proclaim that it is a religion of peace?

I am sorry, I am not hate mongering, just exercising free speech, there is a BIG PROBLEM with Islam and it needs to be fixed. Terry Jones is not an isolated incident, he may have planned something very radical but a large part of Americans are vehemently against the ground zero mosque. Jones has chosen a method to gain attention and it is a peaceful method, now it is the onus of the other side to respond with violence or otherwise.

let me quote few lines of Baba Bulle Shah ( mystic saint)
"Masjid Dha , Mandir Dha
Dha Day Jo Kujh Disda
Par Kissay Da Dil Na Dhawee(n)
Mera Rub Dilaa(n) Wich Wasda"
Meaning
Break down the Mosque, Break down the temple
Break down every thing you can see
But don't break anyone's heart
Because my God lives there

@ Nash - It is a very nice poem but then everyone has to accept it - why it is always non Islamic faith have to show tolerance??

@ MAAZ / NASH - IF YOU CAN PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION RATHER THAN POINTING OUT WHAT ALL IT CAN HAPPEN IF KORANS ARE BURNT.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

This is the beginning of the backlash, people are tired - all these right from Prophet cartoon, Veil ban and Koran burning - all these are happening because Islam leaders and Islamic countries have never been tolerant to others faith - no one is asking Muslims to convert or leave Islam, all they are trying to say that be tolerant to other religions and give eh followers of other religions the freedom that you want.

nashbloom wrote on 10 September, 2010

Dear CB the poem was written by Bulleh Shah whose real name was Abdullah Shah and he was a Muslim. So you have to accept it majoirity of muslims are peace loving and due to some bad elements the religion of Islam is tarnished.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

@ Nash - don't give isolated examples, these are convenient excuses and intellectual acrobatics.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

I am not taking of Islamic terrorism here but it is fueled because of the intolerant attitudes of Islamic nations to people of other faith. The monster idea of religious supremacy is behind the tensions, otherwise why there is a problem in allowing temples and churches in Saudi Arabia or Middle East??

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

Why then majority of Muslims are not looking into the religious intolerance that Islamic nations practices against people of other faith?

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

If you want to love in harmony, you cannot say your religion is perfect and so everyone has to tolerate your religious sentiments but you will not tolerate others.

I am clearing seeing the writings on the wall, there will be a huge change in the world in the next decade, people of other religion has become impatient, they have started protesting and it will continue. Now, if Islam is really a religion of peace (I believe at least that most Muslims like people of any other faith are peace loving), then Muslism have to see that they also learn to tolerate and respect others religious freedom instead of blackmailing that more terror incidents will happen.

I also strongly believe that many Muslims understand and privately acknowledge this (intolerance of other faiths) but the leadership is highly corrupt and they use Islam as a tool to govern, I don't see a modern reformist leader in the horizon in he Muslim world.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

MAAZ / NASH - I HOPE YOU WILL ANSWER TO MY POINTS, THERE IS NO HATE AGAINST ANY INDIVIDUAL OR RELIGION BUT DEFINITELY THERE IS A LOT OF DISMAY. MOST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD ARE PEACE LOVING FROM AFGHANISTAN TO UNITED STATES.

nashbloom wrote on 10 September, 2010

Do watch the Movie Infidel
its a nice british comedy about a muslim who comes to know he was born jewish.
Developed countries are more tolerant and Poor countries are more volatile.
The only problem is education and jobs. Provide the poor country with good education and job opportunities and you will find more peace and harmony there.
Religion unites does not divide.
People divide for their vested intrests

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

@ Nash - Why are you so cautious to comment on intolerance by Islamic states on non Islamic population? Is it a fiction or a fact??

nashbloom wrote on 10 September, 2010

CB cause people like me makes this earth a more liveable place.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

There are many poor countries in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe - they are not blowing themselves up. And the majority of the 9/11 bomber contingent was from Saudi Arabia which has the highest GDP among the Islam states, so poverty is not the question here.

The root cause is intolerance, I am not saying the other religions are Holy Cows but they have at least evolved and matured.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

I understand that there is no easy answers to these questions, let's hope there is a goodwill from all sides to promote peace and reconcile differences.

Ranger wrote on 10 September, 2010

Poverty is not the direct reason but of course an indirect reason, they are getting the mass support base of extremism because of poverty only.

I don't have words to describe after reading this blog, a man who is being condemned by every one in the world is hailed as a hero, CB, either you are extremist or an insane person.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

@ sangita, you should first have political maturity to interpret world affairs, if pastor's actions are so insignificant then why the Secretary of Defense (Defense Minister) made a personal call and requested him to reconsider the decision? If a large part of America is not rallying behind him, he would not have got the courage to again suspend the Koran Bonfire from canceled status. Yesterday around this time there were about 4K members and the cached google page is showing 16K - the page probably has been taken off but discussions continue over different forums worldwide for and against the Koran burning.

An interesting post I am copying here from Fox news:

The Muslims want the world to respect their religion, maybe it's high time they start respecting other religions and cultures. The very idea that this will bring harm to our troops is preposterous, they are already in the belly of the beast LOOKING FOR A FIGHT !!!

Islam is peaceful, couldn't prove it by me, the majority of the conflicts in the world today have one side that is of a radical Islamic belief slaughtering innocent civilians men, women and children alike, how does that convey peace? It simply doesn't.

This Terry Jones guy is reveling in the attention he's garnered and his coffers are collecting tenfold. That he wants to burn a Qur'an is itself protected speech here in this country yet the Fed has thrown nearly every official they can at this guy including a phone call from Defense Sec Gates, and a visit by the FBI. This administration is treading very tediously with the first amendment, no they haven't shut him down but the various governmental officials getting involved tells me they want to in a very bad way. Are our constitutionally protected rights the scapegoat for political correctness, I think not.

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

The people of this country have become pacifists. They are so concerned with upsetting other people or cultures when these very other cultures don't give a squat about the USA and insult our symbols be it our flag or various religions by burning our flag and bibles on a regular basis. A simple search with google provides the proof not to mention the media throwing it in our faces on nearly a daily basis, yet we're expected to sit and take it, not get upset or mad and turn the other cheek. Screw that!

A man who gives up his freedom for the promise of security deserves neither. Our founding fathers are twisting in their graves at the political correctness run a muck. Democrats and Liberals alike are to be run out of political office on a rail if they so much as mention a concept known otherwise as political correctness. Wake up America!

THIS IS THE AMERCIAN SENTIMENT AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND IT FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE BEFORE CALLING NAMES.

Burning of Korans never happened even at the height of conflict with Pakistan whether by military or civilians and Indians should be proud about it.

The people who ought to have taken lead in the protests are silent, what is Saudi King Abdullah doing?? Isn't he the "custodian of two holy mosques"?

cosmicbomber wrote on 10 September, 2010

Good to know that Major Singh, Indian army is very professional and so expected.

The latest in Koran burning row, BBC flashing.. "Florida church behind Koran-burning threat sets two-hour deadline for imam involved in New York mosque to make contact."

Ranger wrote on 11 September, 2010

Why worry about Koran or Bible? Theology is unnecessary, says Hawking. "God may exist, but science can explain the universe without the need for a creator," Stephen Hawking told CNN's "Larry King Live" in an interview yesterday.

Think in this line and then we need not fight for religious supremacy.

Let me give you a sense of following this "American hero" has. The number of members in his church (Dove World Outreach Center) is 50 (including his wife); six years before that, it had 100 members. Gainesville Mayor Lowe referred to Dove World as a "tiny fringe group and an embarrassment to our community"

To learn some interesting things about the pastor and his "Burn the Quran" I urge you to listen to the following interview which I promise you is quite revealing and interesting. Towards the end, he agrees to burn the Talmud (the Jewish holy book) as well.

During the course of the interview he mentinos that followers of Hinduism will burn in Hell as will followers of Islam and other religions.
